Cosmetic dentistry has become increasingly popular in recent years, but believe it or not, it’s been around for centuries. In fact, it can be dated all the way back to 700 BCE, when the Etruscans began using ivory, human teeth, and bone to craft the first known pair of dentures. If you’re wondering about how this elective field of dentistry began, keep reading for some fascinating facts!
The Start of Something Big
Back in ancient Egypt, your smile was considered a status symbol. Wealthy citizens broadcast their riches by replacing lost teeth with gold and seashells. Any remaining teeth would be buffed with vinegar and pumice, which was harmful to the enamel, but still not as gross as in ancient Rome, where they used urine as mouthwash!
The Medieval Era
During medieval times, the concept of dentistry had not been invented yet, so people went to the barber to care for their smiles. Unfortunately, barbers don’t know much about teeth, so they did more harm than good. Typical treatments included filing the teeth down and applying a topcoat that while designed to make the teeth appear whiter, destroyed the enamel and eventually the entire tooth!
The 1700s to 1800s
By the 1700s, dentists were using porcelain to create dentures, and by the 1800s dental implants were being attached via metal in empty tooth sockets. Although these implants were ultimately a failure, it did bring about a new era of porcelain restorations, which are still in use today.
The 20th Century to Present Day
By the beginning of the 20th century, porcelain restorations were still a bit too expensive for the average person, so dentists began using plastic and acrylic instead. Today, these materials are still popular for dentures.
Furthermore, peroxide began to be used in teeth whitening, and by the 1990s, they were using lasers to boost the effectiveness of treatment. Dental bonding, dental implants, porcelain veneers and clear aligners also became increasingly popular in dental clinics and have remained as in-demand as ever to this day!
Remember, cosmetic dentistry treatments may not have been very successful at first, but today’s procedures are safer and more effective than ever. If you’re ready to transform your smile, speak to your dentist today about your options and how you can benefit from centuries of history!
