What Are Implant Dentures?

Dental implants are small screw-like devices, sometimes described as posts, that we surgically place into the jawbone. Their job is to serve as prosthetic tooth roots. Once they bond with the surrounding tissue, they can provide an incredibly strong base of support for dentures.

There are two main categories of implant dentures. When you visit us for a consultation, we will help you determine whether a fixed or removable prosthetic is better for your unique circumstances.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

Fixed implant dentures, sometimes called a fixed full bridge, are designed to stay in your mouth 24/7. They can only be removed by a dental professional. Many patients love the convenience and strength of a full-time smile. However, this method does require more implant posts than a removable prosthetic.

Removable Implant Dentures

Supported by 2 – 5 implants per arch, removable implant dentures snap onto and off of their support posts via ball- or bar-shaped attachments. Their removability makes them easy to clean and maintain on a daily basis. In certain cases, an existing denture can even be retrofitted to work as a removable implant denture.

The Implant Denture Procedure

The implant denture procedure has four main stages:

  • Consultation: We will verify your candidacy for the procedure and start planning your treatment.
  • Dental implant surgery: Your implant posts will be inserted at their pre-planned positions.
  • Osseointegration: Over a period of a few months, the implants will bond with your body. Then, we may need to perform another procedure to place small connector pieces (abutments) on top of them.
  • Restoration: You will receive your beautiful new teeth.

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

You might be a candidate for implant dentures if:

  • You are missing all or most of your teeth throughout one of your dental arches.
  • Your jawbone is healthy enough and large enough to support dental implants.
  • You are free of active gum disease and other conditions that might compromise the success of your implants.
  • You have good habits that will promote your new smile’s long-term success.

If you are unsure of whether you qualify, visit us for a consultation. Most adults with extensive tooth loss can get implant dentures, either right away or after some preliminary procedures.
